How to stay on track during the week of Thanksgiving

It's that time of the year! The holidays are upon us and with less than a week away from Thanksgiving, we are already starting to celebrate with of course, FOOD! We have pot lucks at work, Friendsgiving with lots of wine, and the traditional Thanksgiving dinner meal! So many opportunities to get off track with our health and fitness goals, but with the right resources and mindset/support, this year doesn't have to be like the others!

Here is what some of your typical Thanksgiving day meal options and how much exercise it takes to burn off their calories!..and keep in mind that a lot of people eat more than one time a day!!

Of course with that in mind, don't be rude or hasty and cut out eating that delicious meal all together! You work hard all week, this meal is all about portions, picking your options carefully, and maintaining a workout routine!

If you have problems with deciphering what are good portions like I used to, use this handy tool to figure out how much of what you should be having at the dinner table so that you're not going overboard. This is a great tool for portion sizes at all times, but especially on big meals like Thanksgiving dinner.

Remember to drink WATER with your meal too, we often mistake thirst for hunger. Liquid calories can also easily add up. Having cocktails with family (wine, beers, EGGNOG!) is a social norm amongst most households on the holidays. The best advice is to steer clear all together, but if you have to choose, choose something with low calories and LOW SUGARS! Just because it's low calories doesn't mean it's healthy, a lot of those low calorie cocktails are chalked full of artificial sweeteners and sugars!

YIKES. Those are not friendly numbers in my world and I am doubting they are friendly to you either. They are totally avoidable though, just because it's the holidays doesn't mean you have to pig out and totally lose control of your eating habits! It also doesn't mean you need to be doing 2 a days of Insanity or P90X just to make room for your favorites! Even a brisk walk around the neighborhood with family members or use the no equipment, Thanksgiving Day workout I have provided below to help get your heart pumping! Remember to always consult a doctor before starting any type of workout program!

Clean Eating Nacho Casserole

If you love nachos like I do, this is the perfect, clean spin to satisfy your craving. I topped it with some avocado, but you can add lettuce, tomato, peppers, any veggies you like to complete your masterpiece!

  • 1 lbs lean ground turkey, browned and drained.
  • 1 small onion diced
  • 1 small taco seasoning packet 
  • 8 oz jar of taco sauce
  • Plain Greek Yogurt 
  • Low fat Cheddar Cheese (do not use cheese for an even healthier alternative)
  • Whole Grain Tortilla Shells (Hard ones)

1. Brown turkey and onion in a pan over medium high heat.
2. Drain off the liquid and add taco seasoning packet with 1/4 c water.
3. Stir until combined.  Then add taco sauce and stir.
4. Layer a baking dish with crunched up taco shells
Then put a layer of ground meat, thin layer of greek yogurt, tiny bit of cheddar cheese (emphasize TINY), then layer with shells, ground meat, greek yogurt and cheddar cheese on top.
5. Cook/Heat in oven for 12-15 minutes, top with veggies or avocado, enjoy!

Pumpkin Pie Shakeology

Pumpkin pie is my FAVORITE holiday dessert! But it comes with a cost on the waist line. Not only does this recipe allow me to feed my pumpkin pie craving, but it keeps me full and curbs my cravings since Shakeology has zero artificial sweeteners, artificial flavors, and soy! I hope you enjoy this as much as I do!

1 scoop of chocolate Shakeology
1 cup of unsweetened almond milk
8-10 oz of water
1/2 cup of pumpkin puree (I used canned, Libby's)
1 tsp of cinnamon
4-8 drops of liquid stevia-pumpkin flavored (you could use powdered pumpkin spice)
Ice to taste

Blend and Enjoy!!

30 Day PiYo and Clean Eating Challenge

Alright guys, I was not playing when I said I want to make this the healthiest holiday season yet. My most favorite thing in the entire world, PiYo, is being offered at a special price in more than one capacity for this month only..and I feel it is my duty as a certified instructor, lover, and lifer, I have to share this special opportunity with you AND use it to make this your healthiest holidays yet!!

Refresh your health and faith this holiday season

The holiday's have become not my favorite time of year. Before you write me off as a scrooge, I have my reasoning. I have lost two very important people in my life during the holiday season. My grandmother who raised me passed away two days after Thanksgiving a few years ago. I was unable to say good bye due to work and travel time.

The hardest loss I have suffered happened less than a year ago. Nine days before Christmas. I lost my father to cancer. I was there with him in his final days and was unable to say good bye, but this has been to say, the hardest year of my life.

About 6 months ago, I found God through my grieving. Now trust me, this was no over night process and I am still a work in progress, but I find comfort in knowing that there is a higher power and a reason for everything, among other things. I find comfort in knowing that through him, I will have the opportunity to see my dad again and he is watching over me every day. No one has to believe the same thing, but I have found great comfort in what I believe and know that I will have to really allow it to be a large part of these upcoming weeks.

So I decided to take a challenge and I want to invite 5 women to join me. What does this challenge involve? It involves faith, clean eating, and refreshing our souls and bodies.

Using the 3 day refresh,  clean eating, and Shakeology we will reset our bodies from Thanksgiving meals (I am just as guilty as you are, who can say no to all of that delicious food, right?!). We are going to maintain or lose a few this holiday season, unlike most American people who gain 5-10 lbs!!! CRAZY!

Using the Faith Dare, we will challenge ourselves to 30 days of a challenge of resetting our souls.

What is Insanity Max: 30?

 Shaun T has done it again! He is bringing in the heat and pushing us to the max (as usual) with his new program, Insanity Max: 30!!! I am sure some of you are wondering if this is just Insanity at 30 minutes instead of an hour?.. Nope!!

This 60 day program was designed to push you towards the MAX. It is designed by none other than power house Shaun T with 150 new moves and sequences and intensity to bring your fitness to a new level.

The MAX is just that. You are going to MAX out at every workout. Giving each workout 110% to make yourself healthier and stronger. You may not be able to complete the full 30 minutes at a Shaun T speed, but the program is designed to have you start with Shaun T as long as you can, write down that number you hit, and then drop to modify or take a short break.

What about modifications?

Unlike Insanity, there will be a modifier at all times. You will even be able to choose if you want to watch JUST the modifier or JUST Shaun T. This option sounds amazing and will really allow you to grow as you get stronger.

Will I need Equipment for INSANITY MAX 30?

Nope! You will be using your own body weight just like we did in Insanity. There will be drop sets and all kinds of ways to feel the “burn” all over!
